PROMOTION OF WROCŁAW BY THE ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP OF THE LOCAL OFFICE OF THE ACADEMIA EUROPAEA KNOWLEDGE HUB IN WROCŁAW.

ACADEMIA EUROPAEA KNOWLEDGE HUB WROCŁAW

The activities of Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub Wrocław are mainly focused on three major scopes:

arranging and coordinating of a wide range of scientific events, with the participation of members of Academia Europaea,
participation of Polish members of Academia Europaea and project coordinators in international meetings and conferences in Poland and abroad
promotion of the city of Wrocław amongst the international academic community.

The most substantial and significant activity of AE Wrocław is the organization of scientific events, such as the meetings described below.

THE WROCŁAW SEMINARS

Due to financial support obtained from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, it was possible to carry out 3 seminars organized in the series of The Wrocław Seminars:

Early Modern Print Culture in Central Europe (16-17.09.2013),
Literary Margins and Digital Media (15-17.04.2015),
Central Europe and Colonialism: Migrations, Knowledges, Perspectives, Commodities (21-23.09.2016)
The fourth edition is currently in progress: New Nationalisms: Sources, Agendas, Languages (to be held on 25-27.09.2017).

The predecessor of The Wrocław Seminars was a series Regimes of Memory with two events:

SUPPORT FOR SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS IN WROCŁAW

Academia Europaea Wrocław Knowledge Hub actively supports local initiatives by inviting members of AE to visit the city and contribute to the local events. The Hub helps with a wide circulation of information by distributing the news within its own contact network. In the course of its activity it has already supported such events as:

Two extremely important events for the Hub were the two-day science paper writing workshops The Excellent Science Days (5-6.11.2015), featuring experienced editors of Nature and Nature Physics, and a COST Sci-Generation meeting: Paths Towards Money Independence: Young Scientists’ Careers in Europe (14.04.2016). The main purpose of the latter was to present various career paths for young European researchers. The result of this event was the ERC Day workshop on writing applications for the European Research Council, which took place on 14.11.2016.

ACADEMIA EUROPAEA 25TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

On 16-19 September 2013 in Wrocław took place the jubilee Academia Europaea Annual Conference entitled European Science and Scholarship Looking Ahead – Challenges of the Next 25 Years.

The conference program has provided the opportunity to create a platform for the exchange of views among the most eminent European scientists in all fields, concerning both the current state of science and education, and the key themes and future challenges for European science.

The discussion was also on the opportunities to establish well-balanced research programs in Europe. The involvement of the European and Polish scientific elite in the conference was a unique opportunity of science promotion in the Polish and foreign scientific environment. It was also a great chance to present prominent figures of the Polish scientific world on the international stage and to show that there is a strong connection between the successes and prospects of our country to develop science in Poland, especially among the young generation of researchers.

The conference gathered over 350 attendees, from which about 100 participants came from Poland. Among the speakers, such personalities appeared as:

Nobel Prize laureates: Robert Huber (Chemistry) and Bert Sakmann (Physiology and Medicine),
Gödel Prize laureate: Moshe Y. Vardi,
Tom Kibble – a co-discoverer of the so called “God Particle,”
Martin Rees – one of the most prominent astronomers,
Salvatore Settis – a prominent Italian archeologist, Gambrinus “Giuseppe Mazzotti” Prize laureate,
Jonathan Israel – an excellent historian of the Enlightenment,
Hans Joachim Schellnhuber – a global authority in the field of climate change research,
Helga Nowotny – a world-renowned sociologist, President of the European Research Council,
Anne Glover – Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission,
two excellent scientists from Poland –Piotr Sztompka (a sociologist) and Tomasz Dietl (a physicist),
Norman Davies, one of the greatest historians – laureate of 2013 Erasmus Medal, a prestigious award of Academia Europaea.

During the official opening, ten eminent young scholars from Poland were given certificates within the AE Burgen Scholarship. They had also the opportunity to present their achievements during the official Gala Dinner.

PARTICIPATION IN MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES IN POLAND

At the invitation of Academia members and the Polish scientific institutions, Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub officers have taken part in many initiatives on the national scale, as well as due to Academia’s internal programs, such as the Hubert Curien Fund, the Hub helped co-organize scientific projects in Poland:

INTERNAL MEETINGS

Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub actively organizes and participates in internal meetings of Academia Europaea, such as Academia Europaea annual conferences, meetings of AE hubs and meetings of scientific sections, in which the scientists, who belong to Academia, are involved.

AMUiA AFFILIATION

Thanks to the efforts of Professor Tadeusz Luty, in June 2016 the Academy of Young Scholars and Artists was affiliated to Academia Europaea (https://akademia.wroc.pl/pl).

We believe that the affiliation and further cooperation with the academic environment will have a positive influence on the international recognition of AMUiA, including the recognition of Wrocław among the prominent scholars – members of Academia Europaea. We hope that the future will bring many opportunities to undertake joint international projects.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS

Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub carries out a number of administrative tasks commissioned and supported by the central office in London. They involve the websites updating, coordinating of a process of new members’ nomination, administrative help provided to Academia Europaea’s two classes (Humanities & Social and Related Sciences), cooperation with the Nobel Committee, administrative and logistic support to AE initiatives, on-going assistance with visual identification and branding, and production of the informational and promotional materials of the Academia.
